Character Info:
Name: Jaida Callahan
Age: 21
AU/PG/CANON/OC: OC

Key Points:

  • Jaida lives in a world where anyone and everyone can use magic. Traditional fantasy world meets the industrial revolution, except everything is powered by magic.

  • She's a pretty normal person who got thrown into the extraordinary when she became a Chosen, a person picked to be the next host to one of the Elemental Crystals, a powerful source of magic in her world. Jaida hosts the crystal of Water.

  • She's spent three years investigating a mysterious string of anti-magic incidents.

  • She's absolutely not a stranger to weird things attaching themselves to her and being the source of her life force.

History:
Jaida Callahan hails from a world called Serin, which is a place of magic and wonder. Long ago, the world was thrown into chaos, and the four Elemental Crystals were created to siphon out the excess magic that ran rampant over the world. Over the thousands of years that Serin has been in existence, there have been two constants - a person called the Keeper, who guards the Elemental Crystals, and those called the Chosen, the Keeper's personal guard. As the years have passed and Serin has moved into a more industrial direction, the legend of the Keeper and their Chosen has faded away, thought to be nothing more than simple bedtime stories.

Except it turns out it's very true.

Jaida was born in a sleepy little village called Amerio, the only daughter of two very proud parents. Her life was simple, and it was the kind of village where everyone knew everyone else. While Jaida was happy to work at her family's general store, she yearned to explore places beyond her home. She saved her money diligently for years, announcing when she was 14 that she would travel to the capital city of Iriena and get a formal education. For several years, Jaida learned of business and trade, and took up swordsmanship and painting in her spare time, only to return home at the sudden, shocking passing of her parents. Upon her arrival, she reconnects with old friends and becomes acquainted with a young man named Tahir, who claims he has been searching for her. Jaida is disturbed by his claims and avoids him, but strange events begin happening around the village - mysterious whirlwinds, earthquakes, fires, and sudden bursts of rain - and the sole cause seems to be Jaida, Tahir, and her friends. The four stick closer to each other when the rest of the village grows angry at them, and one night, mysterious lights streak across the sky and strike each of them, causing them to pass out.

When the four awaken, they are confronted by a young girl named Reili, who introduces herself as Serin's latest Keeper. She explains that the four of them are her new Chosen, or rather, her eyes and ears to the world of Serin. Just like that, they're whisked off to bring peace and prosperity to all. In their travels, the group is loosely able to get along at best, and after a year together, the four agree to split up, feeling they can cover better ground apart. Traveling on her own, Jaida does her best to help struggling towns get back on their feet, and then hears rumors of anti-magic striking towns across Serin, prompting her to set out to solve the mystery of it. So far, she's been rather unsuccessful, but she does have leads...

Personality:
Jaida is a bright, social woman with big dreams and an even bigger drive to achieve them. She believes there's more to life if you simply want to grasp it, and once she's decided on something, she'll do whatever it takes to make it happen. She's fairly good at all sorts of domestic tasks and has a good head for business, considering she's spent the last few years studying economics to prepare herself for inheriting her family's business, although Jaida is prone to trying new things out until she finds something she enjoys - her hobbies of swordsmanship and painting took much trial and error, and she was quite the annoyance in school before she got to that point. She makes friends easily and has a tendency to joke around, though it's usually all in good fun.

Naturally fairly good-hearted, Jaida loves to help others as well. She will do anything in her power to make others happy, but she possesses enough self awareness to know when someone's taking advantage of her kindness. She's very good at soothing tempers, having a natural knack for other people's feelings, however isn't quite as effective of a peacemaker, as she's more focused on making people happy than she is solving conflicts.

She can be on the petty and sarcastic side as well, typically when she's irritated. Having dealt with sentient magic that lived inside of her for the past three years and mentally nagged her at every opportunity, Jaida's in no mood to be nattered at by anyone else, and is more than likely to storm off from a conversation when that happens - however, due to that lack of sentient magic, Jaida can be a bit...stupid. And reckless. She enjoys the freedom of no longer being scolded 24/7, but her carefree, come-what-may nature can definitely get her into trouble.

She has a bit of a competitive streak as well, and feels the need to make good on challenges when her pride is on the line. She's not really the type to get angry at things - she can get grumpy, sure, but rarely does she ever fly into rage, as she doesn't like the feeling of anger ruling over her. Death is a bit of a sore spot for her, as her parents' death is still very fresh in her mind, especially since she doesn't feel like she's had enough time to mourn them, having been caught up in Chosen business. Secretly, she wonders if it was foul play, but she doesn't know for sure.

Gem Considerations: Aquamarine on the Heart Chakra, due to its connection with water (it's a lucky stone for sailors!) and because the last crystal she had was on the Heart Chakra and associated with water as well. Aquamarine emits calming, compassionate energy that is able to cleanse someone emotionally and help them move past negative emotions and thought patterns - in essence, it will help Jaida work through the issues the last three years of her life (the death of her parents, being forced onto a journey she didn't exactly want) and help her come out better for it!

Power considerations:
List Three Powers You Would Like Your Character To Have:
  • Water manipulation

  • Weapon summoning

  • Ice manipulation

In her own world, Jaida could use her magic for everyday things, from anything to cooking and cleaning, as could anyone in Serin, so the loss of that will be something she'll need to adjust to and will frustrate her. The loss of her Elemental Crystal will leave her with mixed feelings - though it made her much more powerful by association and allowed her to perform amazing feats with water and ice, she's pretty relieved she doesn't have a formless, sentient being living in her head anymore and nagging at her every turn!

Sample: Waverly Bay is a place she's not sure if she likes yet or not. It's too quaint, even more quaint than Amerio was, and it frustrates her, because hadn't she spent the last several years trying to avoid that? Wasn't that why she saved every last gold piece to go to Iriena and attend school there? She misses lavish buildings and exciting sights, she misses the train sweeping across the countryside...

She misses Serin.

Serin made sense. Magic could be used to do anything there - even something as simple as taking photographs and cleaning up a shattered plate in the kitchen. How could all these people deal with it? Weren't they frustrated, having to do everything by hand? She was! It was aggravating! Ridiculous! Completely unthinkable! She grumbles at the mere thought of it all, before absently gripping at her chest.

Right. That was right. Aquus - the Water Crystal she had housed inside of her for three years - wasn't around anymore. Instead there was another rock embedded in her chest. It hadn't even hurt this time - or if it had, she certainly hadn't felt it when she arrived in the Temple.

As much as she hates to admit it, she misses Aquus too.

Aquus had been annoying. Constantly harping about everything, never letting her rest for a moment. They always had something to complain about! But not having Aquus around is lonely. Like having a close friend live with you, and suddenly they move away. She sort of missed them, even if she felt crazy afterwards for it. It's Aquus, Jaida, they wouldn't care anyways. she chides herself, but it does little to make the loneliness fade away. Tahir, Vayu, Lesedi - she misses them all too, of course, but they'd hardly kept in contact after splitting ways. In a way, it was almost for the best.

Jaida pauses, takes a deep breath of the ocean air. All of this grumping was getting her nowhere! The Heart had told her that day that this was her new home - and despite her protests, it hadn't yielded on it.

Well.

Well.

If this mess wasn't going to solve itself, she couldn't keep twiddling her thumbs. She was Jaida Callahan, she could do anything she put her mind to! And if the Heart said she'd have to stay here, she'd just have to make the best of it or die trying.

With a smile, she goes on her way - this time, ready to take on Waverly Bay as best she can.
